Ruqya is seeking refuge in Allah, supplicating and reciting the Quran over a sick person, asking Allah for healing. It is an act of worship established in the Sunnah: the Prophet ﷺ performed ruqya for himself and his companions.
Conditions of ruqya
- It uses the words of Allah, His names and attributes, or transmitted supplications.
- It is in Arabic or a language whose meaning is understood.
- One believes it has no effect by itself, only by Allah's decree.
Signs of a charlatan
- Asks for your mother's name or a piece of your clothing.
- Asks you to sacrifice an animal for other than Allah.
- Writes talismans or unclear words, or claims knowledge of the unseen.
A genuine raqi recites the Quran clearly in front of you and directs you to prayer and remembrance of Allah.
